It turns out, virtue is the virtuous mean between doing nothing and being destructive.
We know sin is destructive, because in Genesis we read the account of sin disordering the cosmos. We know doing nothing is bad from the words of Christ–“be ye hot or be ye cold” (paraphrased badly from memory).
So if you are going to DO anything, really your only option is to do it virtuously, and do it well. We MUST do something, and we MUST NOT sin, so that really leaves only the one option.
So every time we step out our door, pick up tools, and DO something, the only option is to do it well. Voluntary destruction is really hard to look at. It’s why putting on the Brown Scapular is a radical act; it’s why art is a radical act. Creating art means we have undertaken to do something. A blank canvas isn’t art. Deconstructive art is disordered art.
This is a half formed idea, but the TL;DR is this: if we choose to do something, we must choose to do it well. We’re going to make an accounting to God for our time, and since how we dispose of our hours is voluntary–how much more will we be held accountable for the intentional destruction we cause?
